“Frequent & Reliable Small Launch is Here”

Joint Los Angeles and San Fernando Valley Chapter virtual meeting on July 17

We are in an exciting new era of small satellite technology – one that’s making life on Earth better. Small satellites keep us connected, provide security, help us monitor resources and environmental change, and they enable us to explore new and exciting science that benefits us all.

Access to orbit for these small satellites has been challenging, until now. Rocket Lab believes the launch process should be simple, seamless and tailored to your mission – from idea to orbit. Since the Electron launch vehicle was first conceived in 2013, every detail of the Rocket Lab launch experience has been designed to provide small satellites with rapid, reliable and affordable access to space.

Please join us online on Friday, July 17, 8:00–9:00am PST when Shane Fleming, VP Global Commercial Launch Services, Rocket Lab, will present how innovation is at the core of the Electron launch vehicle, just as it’s at the core of the revolutionary small satellites they’re launching to orbit. Electron was designed to be built and launched with unprecedented frequency, while providing the smoothest ride and most precise deployment to orbit for your satellite. They have also developed the world’s only private orbital launch pad to provide unrivalled scheduling freedom. Humankind’s next major achievements await us on orbit. We’ll take you there.

The meeting is free for members and $25 for non-members For more information and to register to attend the meeting go to http://adflajul20.eventbrite.com.

“Set Up to Fail? Cybersecurity Compliance in the Last Mile of the DoD Supply Chain”

Virtual Meeting of the Santa Clarita Valley Chapter on July 16

Meeting Location: Virtual Meeting
Meeting Date: Thursday, July 16, 2020
Meeting Time: 8:00-9:00am PST

Many small and mid-size aerospace and defense (A&D) manufacturers want to diversify their sales pipelines by participating in the DoD supply chain as a result of diminished demand in the commercial aviation markets.

Please join us online on Thursday, July 16, 8:00–9:00am PST, when Jacob Horne, Sr. Cybersecurity Consultant, California Manufacturing Technology Consulting (CMTC), will describe how pivoting to the DoD supply chain has its own set of challenges and cybersecurity requirements.

The regulatory landscape of the defense industrial base is experiencing a sea change. Yet, the situation on the ground points to a challenging future for DoD suppliers. Defense Federal Acquisition Regulation Supplement (DFARS) compliance obligations are required to be flowed down from the prime contractor to the subcontracting supply chain wherever controlled unclassified information (CUI) goes. This process is unknown to most small and mid-sized aerospace and defense (A&D) manufacturers (SMMs) and IT managed services providers (MSPs). Soon Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC) modifications to DFARS will prevent A&D SMMs from bidding on contracts as a result of poor IT MSP management.

The combination of reliance on managed service providers and nebulous guidance from regulatory bodies has resulted in a distributed cybersecurity ecosystem with little hope of achieving compliance on its own. The rush to replace compliance self-attestation with third party audits has put both businesses and sensitive information at risk.

Cybersecurity is not a question of technology but rather is a function of robust supply chain risk management.

The meeting is free for A&D Forum Individual and Corporate members and $25 for non-members and is limited to 100 attendees. For more information and to register to attend the meeting go to http://adfscvjul20.eventbrite.com.

“The State of NewSpace – Revolution and Evolution”

National Online Forum meeting on June 17

As the world slowly emerges from the Covid-19 epidemic, there is one bright star in the future of space business. The Space Revolution, headlined by Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos, and presented by Rick Tumlinson at the A&D Forum’s first ever meeting in May 2010, is well underway. As last weekend’s launch of the SpaceX Dragon demonstrated, even as economies shudder, the push to open space through low cost reusable spaceships is moving ahead at full thrust.

Please join us online Wednesday, June 17, 8:00–9:00am PST when Rick Tumlinson (Founder and Chairman, SpaceFund) and Meagan Crawford (Managing Partner, SpaceFund) will present their take on the state of space, both from an investor’s perspective and a broader economic and strategic viewpoint, and share their view of what is to come on the frontier of this new industrial revolution.

The meeting is free for members and $25 for non-members and is limited to 100 attendees. For more information and to register to attend the meeting go to http://adfnofjun20.eventbrite.com.

“The JPL VITAL Ventilator Project: A successful rapid response design and prototyping effort”

Joint Los Angeles and San Fernando Valley Chapter virtual meeting on June 19

Starting in the middle of March 2020, a group of JPL engineers envisioned how JPL innovative engineering may be able to help solve the national and global crisis in the shortage of ventilators to help distressed patients suffering from consequences of the COVID-19 virus.

By late April, with the assistance of local physicians who were treating COVID-19 patients, a group of JPL engineers prototyped two different designs focused on requirements defined by the respiratory experts; tested the prototype at the frontline of the pandemic at the New York Mt. Sinai Hospital, submitted the design to the FDA for Emergency Use Authorization, showcased the prototype at the White House to the POTUS, obtained FDA/EUA, and issued a global royalty free license, and received over 100 applicants world-wide… all in less than 2 months.

Please join us online Friday, June 19, 8:00–9:00am PST when Leon Alkalai, JPL Fellow, Manager of the Office of Strategic Partnerships, Jet Propulsion Laboratory, California Institute of Technology, will give us an interesting look at how to tap your organization’s strengths, pivot the business in response to unforeseen challenges and opportunities, and do it successfully in a very short timeframe. Not only is this a compelling and timely topic, but the takeaway lessons in formulating a vision, building a highly effective team, and impeccable execution derived from this effort have applicability to virtually any business.

The meeting is free for members and $25 for non-members and is limited to 100 attendees. For more information and to register to attend the meeting go to http://adflajun20.eventbrite.com.

“Is Real-Time Improvement Disrupting Continuous Improvement?”

Meeting of the Santa Clarita Valley Chapter meeting on May 21

Meeting Location: Virtual Meeting
Meeting Date: Thursday, May 21, 2020
Meeting Time: 8:00-9:00am PST

Continuous Improvement currently relies on discrete Kaizen and Six Sigma events. These tend to be uncoordinated and do not transform the enterprise effectively and rapidly. In addition, advances in digital technology and internet of things (IIoT) are delivering smarter operations and intelligent business systems that has made the current transformation cycle far quicker, more disruptive, and far more destructive for those that fail to act quickly enough. Based on the rate of change many companies may find their current business model will not remain economically viable and the need to continuously evolve business processes has never been greater.

Please join us online on Friday, May 21, 8:00–9:00am PST, when Carlos Chavez of Crean Incorporated will provide a high-level guide on why we must transform and what we must do to successfully implement the required changes focused on directly and positively impacting the P&L and striving for manufacturing excellence in the digital world. This is key to strengthening your critical competitive position in the marketplace.

The meeting is free for A&D Forum Individual and Corporate members and $25 for non-members and is limited to 100 attendees. For more information and to register to attend the meeting go to http://adfscvjun20.eventbrite.com.
