LauncherOne: Enabling Affordable Responsive Space Missions

Los Angeles Chapter meeting on June 21

NOTE: Building security policy. All attendees must register no less than 24 hours in advance of the meeting or they will not be allowed entrance to the building.

The dynamics of world politics, and the ever evolving and rapidly changing threat profiles are driving the DOD and intelligence communities to closely evaluate private space enterprises for responsive and flexible launch solutions. Virgin Orbit, with the development of the LauncherOne vehicle, is at the forefront of providing just such capability.

Please join us in Century City on Friday, June 21, 7:30–9:00am, when Mandy Vaughn, President of VOX Space, will discuss:

• Virgin Orbit’s efforts to date
• The development of LauncherOne, a small satellite launch vehicle, air-launched from a 747 carrier aircraft, and
• Introduce VOX Space, a subsidiary company of Virgin Orbit, that is responsible for the program management, mission management and systems engineering for our National Security Space missions

This briefing will give you an in-depth introduction to the LauncherOne system and small satellite market, and VOX Space’s role in the small satellite and responsive space eco-system from a mission perspective and how that impacts their team composition and interactions with the customers. Mandy will share her perspectives on the small satellite and “new space” market sector. Finally, we’ll look at some of the possible improvements/changes to “business as usual” that may foster increased utilization of small satellites into the National Security Space community and help improve system resiliency.

The small launch vehicle is a burgeoning area of the space industry and SoCal aerospace market, and this is an opportunity to hear firsthand from an executive leading an innovative team to help meet the national security launch demand.

The meeting is free for members and $30 for non-members ($40 after June 13). Guests may attend two chapter meetings for free. For more information and to register to attend the meeting go to https://adflajun19.eventbrite.com.

The LA chapter of The Aerospace & Defense Forum is sponsored by RSM, California Bank & Trust, Chubb, Bolton & Company Insurance Brokers, Stanton Chase, and Jeffer, Mangels, Butler & Mitchell.

“The Upcoming Defense Budget and Its Impact on Your Business”

San Diego Chapter meeting on May 28

Meeting location: Sheppard Mullin Richter & Hampton LLP
12275 El Camino Real, Suite 200, San Diego, CA 92130-2006
Meeting Date: Tuesday, May 28
Meeting Time:
Registration and Networking: 5:30 p.m.
Meeting: 6:15-7:45 p.m.

Identifying opportunities, managing current operations, preparing for CR, structuring proposals for price to win, and ultimately, winning contracts has always been a complex process for DoD contractors. However, today’s upcoming budget, procurement backdrops, and inevitable continuing resolution have fostered an increasingly competitive environment and created additional challenges for companies operating in the industry.

On August 20, 2018, Congress approved the 2019 Department of Defense budget of $686.1 billion, this is the earliest the defense budget has been passed in the last 40 years.

On March 11, 2019, President Donald J. Trump sent Congress a proposed Department of Defense Fiscal Year (FY) 2020 Budget of $718.3 billion. The deadline to lift sequestration caps, to prevent spending cuts, is October 1.

Please join us in San Diego on Tuesday, May 28th, 2019 (registration & Networking: 5:30-6:15pm, meeting: 6:15-7:45pm PST), when the event will begin with Networking followed by a panel of experts to include San Diego Military Advisory Council (SDMAC), Deltek, and San Diego Regional EDC with perspectives on what’s coming tomorrow and long-term. We will address the budget and contracting trends with each individual offering their point of view on how to successfully navigate the current contracting environment.

The meeting is free for members & $40 for non-members ($30 Early Bird until May 21). For more information and to register to attend the meeting go to http://adfsdmay19.eventbrite.com.

Tour of Bandy Manufacturing

San Fernando Valley Chapter meeting on May 21

Meeting Location: Bandy Manufacturing, 3420 N San Fernando Blvd, Burbank, CA 91510
Meeting Date: May 21
Meeting Time:
– Breakfast and Tour: 7:00-7:30am
– Meeting and Tour: 7:30-9:00am

Bandy Manufacturing was founded by Gerry W. Bandy in 1953 to provide high quality hinges for the burgeoning aircraft industry. After a succession of corporate owners that began in 1995 and ended in August 2017, the company is now, once again, privately-held after its acquisition from GKN Aerospace by JW Hill Capital. The company is building on its past entrepreneurial and customer-focused history, with the goal of creating a dynamic and forward-thinking culture.

The Company’s fleet of CNC milling machines combined with its custom hinge drilling and slotting machines allows it to make custom hinges ranging in length from 0.5 inches to 40 feet. Each year Bandy supplies more than one million hinges, access panels, structural components, door panels and assemblies to customers around the globe. Bandy supports virtually every type and class of aircraft and aerospace vehicle: whether military or commercial, civil or private.

Bandy can produce more than 1 mile (almost 6,000 feet) of extruded aluminum MS20001 hinges per day. Bandy’s customized, proprietary drilling machines can drill a 40-foot hinge pin hole while maintaining a concentricity tolerance of .005 inch. More information can be found at www.bandymanufacturing.com.

The meeting is free for members and $40 for non-members ($30 Early Bird until May 14). Guests may attend twice for free. For more information and to register to attend the meeting go to http://adfsfvmay19.eventbrite.com.

Tour of MotoArt

South Bay Chapter meeting in Torrance on May 8.

If you are an aircraft enthusiast and have wondered what becomes of commercial and military planes that are no longer in service, come join us for our May tour of MotoArt. The crew at MotoArt rescues planes of yesteryear and preserves them in a way that gives everyone an opportunity to own part of aviation history.

At their manufacturing facility and showroom in Torrance, MotoArt creates functional furniture and unique art for the home or office from planes that have been decommissioned. They have been a part of the South Bay’s aviation and aerospace community for decades. Articles about MotoArt have been in local newspapers and numerous magazines.

The numerous models of planes have been honored by having desks, tables, beds, benches, sculptures and art made from them, including the B-1B Bomber and the 747. Another way that MotoArt allows industry aficionados to enjoy a small part of aviation is through their PlaneTags™ division. The company makes plane tags for your luggage or keys that are made from the skins of various commercial, defense and vintage aircraft or rotocraft.
