“Post-COVID Aerospace Market Outlook”

Los Angeles Chapter virtual meeting on May 19

The COVID pandemic in 2020 triggered a significant downturn in air traffic, aircraft production rates, and MRO. However, as the aerospace industry turned the calendar to 2021, our outlook also turned – beyond relief that 2020 was over, there seemed to be optimism as well. As the year progresses, vaccine rollouts and less restrictive COVID measures are building an expectation that things are returning to normal.

How, when, and in what ways will this normal ultimately spill over into aviation:
• How are air travel and aerospace production recovering?
• Is the industry recovering as we’d thought?
• What is the outlook for 2021?
• When will production rates return to 2019 levels?
• What challenges will the industry face in the market recovery? (e.g., supply chain capability)

Please join us online on Wednesday, May 19, 8:00–9:00am Pacific Time when Peter Zimm, Principal, and Cliff Collier, Principal, of Charles Edwards Management Consulting will address these topics from both market and supply chain viewpoints in an informative and interactive session that will provide the audience with new perspective on the state of the industry recovery.

The meeting is free for members and $25 for non-members For more information and to register to attend the meeting go to https://adflamay21.eventbrite.com/.

“Decrypting Aerospace Ventures and the SPAC Craze”

Los Angeles Chapter virtual meeting on April 21

Four years ago only SpaceX, Planet, and perhaps one other startup could claim to be part of a once exclusive club. Over the last 12 months however, we’ve seen more than 20 aerospace startups evolve from ‘early-stage’ to unicorns, through direct listings, special purpose acquisition companies (SPACs), or late-stage private funding rounds. When reflecting back on the original vision for Starburst and its inception 10 years ago, the writing on the wall was clear: legacy industry was under attack and the startups were coming. Anticipating the disruption, we launched the first and still the only truly global aerospace accelerator to help founders realize their dreams while finding the rest of us better ways to travel and explore.

If we look back on this past year in more detail, and more specifically the most recent 3 months, valuations of aviation, space, and defense companies have skyrocketed; literally! SPACs have fueled companies in virtually every industry, and aerospace & defense has certainly been a significant player. In 2020, during a once in a hundred-year pandemic, SPACs raised $83B on U.S. exchanges, accounting for approximately 46% of the total of all IPOs according to Bloomberg data. In 2021, 270 SPACs have already exceeded the 2020 total in raising more than $88B year-to-date. Since late 2019, space- and satellite-based companies and other companies in the A&D sector have seen considerable interest from SPACs. Similarly, SPACs have been looked at by many startup space- and satellite-based companies as attractive vehicles for access to the public equity markets after their original venture capital rounds of funding.

Please join us online on Wednesday, April 21, 8:00–9:00am Pacific Time when Van Espahbodi, Co-Founder and Managing Partner, Starburst, will give us an interesting update on how Starburst supports early stage and growth companies, and a discussion of whether the wave of considerable interest from SPACs will continue.

The meeting is free for members and $25 for non-members. For more information and to register to attend the meeting go to https://adflaapr21.eventbrite.com/.

“U.S. Space Policies for the Final Economic Frontier”

Joint Los Angeles and San Fernando Valley Chapter virtual meeting on February 11

On the heels of the recently released 2020 National Space Policy and the 2020 election, Bruce Cahan and Mir Sadat released “U.S. Space Policies for the New Space Age: Competing on the Final Economic Frontier”, a report on transforming existing and emerging U.S. space policies, legislation, and strategies into action plans that will ensure U.S. strategic leadership in space for the 2040-2060 timeframe. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce estimates that the global space market will increase from approximately $385 billion in 2020 to at least $1.5 trillion by 2040. Rising economic benefits, national security importance, and advances in fundamental technologies also contribute to the growth in numbers and the improved capabilities of spacefaring nations. Advancements in commercial space technologies reduce costs and unlock new opportunities for economic growth and dual-use capabilities for ally and adversary spacefaring nations.

China’s One Belt and One Road Initiative (OBOR) is its long-range plan for geopolitical and economic supremacy, spanning initially 64 and now 100 countries. Space infrastructure, from launch to satellite imagery and telecommunications, is now part of the OBOR Initiative. The Initiative aligns China’s economic, industrial, and political assets for implementation and permanent financing. Space and cyberspace components of the OBOR Initiative are just the most visible parts of China’s long-term economic and national security commitments to dominate the emerging space economy. China has successfully aligned its diplomatic, economic, industrial, and political assets for implementation and permanent financing. Such attempts aim to weaken U.S. strategic leadership in space by creating schisms with allies and partners, and undermining U.S. long-term planning and commitment in space.

The United States must seize this decade’s opportunities to retain U.S. strategic leadership in space by creating and implementing cohesive economic, financial, diplomatic, S&T, and policymaking plans to meet the challenge. The recent 2020 U.S. National Space Policy, and associated government policies, reflect the cumulative policy improvements of the recent years.

Please join us online on Thursday, February 11, 8:00–9:00am PST when Dr. Mir Sadat, Former Policy Director, the National Security Council of the Executive Office of the President at the White House, will take an intriguing look at the challenges facing the United States space industry, and will provide insights on the path forward. In order to keep up with the exponential space technology and industry evolution, and the rising challenges for national security, the United States needs: 1) an enduring 2060 National Space Vision, 2) a better organizational system to advance interagency policies, and 3) to augment market-based economic activities with visionary policies.

The meeting is free for members and $25 for non-members. For more information and to register to attend the meeting go to https://adflasfvfeb21.eventbrite.com/.

“Practical considerations for returning to work in the post-COVID-19 world”

Joint Los Angeles and San Fernando Valley Chapter virtual meeting on August 26

Many A&D Forum members participate in the Defense Supply Chain and thus never really closed. Portions of their workforce were continuing to work in a manufacturing environment with daily health screening, mask wearing, social distancing, increased hygiene and in some cases regular Covid-19 testing. Once we can return to work, things will change once again and may cause some disruption. Manufacturing plants that never closed will have to determine what new practices to keep and what to discontinue. Some workforce members that transitioned to remote work may stay that way and others will return to in office/plant work environments. The only certainty is there will be changes, but no one knows what those changes will be.

Since March, employers have been reeling from government shelter-in-place orders and constantly evolving guidance and requirements pertaining to COVID-19.

Please join us online on Wednesday, August 26, 7:30–9:00am Pacific Time when Ben Tulis, Advice & Counsel Attorney, Jackson Lewis P.C., will discuss common issues employers are facing in California and nationally from when a worksite can re-open, guidelines for essential businesses and what to do if an employee refuses to return. Other topics will include the latest information on COVID-19 specific leave information, COVID-19 specific accommodations, guidance for safety in the workplace, and teleworking employees. This area is constantly evolving and the presentation will focus on the most timely issues based on the guidance at the time of the meeting. We will also discuss the various federal, state, and local requirements and resources that help employers stay up to date.

The meeting is free for members and $25 for non-members. For more information and to register to attend the meeting go to http://adfsfvaug20.eventbrite.com.

“Frequent & Reliable Small Launch is Here”

Joint Los Angeles and San Fernando Valley Chapter virtual meeting on July 17

We are in an exciting new era of small satellite technology – one that’s making life on Earth better. Small satellites keep us connected, provide security, help us monitor resources and environmental change, and they enable us to explore new and exciting science that benefits us all.

Access to orbit for these small satellites has been challenging, until now. Rocket Lab believes the launch process should be simple, seamless and tailored to your mission – from idea to orbit. Since the Electron launch vehicle was first conceived in 2013, every detail of the Rocket Lab launch experience has been designed to provide small satellites with rapid, reliable and affordable access to space.

Please join us online on Friday, July 17, 8:00–9:00am PST when Shane Fleming, VP Global Commercial Launch Services, Rocket Lab, will present how innovation is at the core of the Electron launch vehicle, just as it’s at the core of the revolutionary small satellites they’re launching to orbit. Electron was designed to be built and launched with unprecedented frequency, while providing the smoothest ride and most precise deployment to orbit for your satellite. They have also developed the world’s only private orbital launch pad to provide unrivalled scheduling freedom. Humankind’s next major achievements await us on orbit. We’ll take you there.

“The JPL VITAL Ventilator Project: A successful rapid response design and prototyping effort”

Joint Los Angeles and San Fernando Valley Chapter virtual meeting on June 19

Starting in the middle of March 2020, a group of JPL engineers envisioned how JPL innovative engineering may be able to help solve the national and global crisis in the shortage of ventilators to help distressed patients suffering from consequences of the COVID-19 virus.

By late April, with the assistance of local physicians who were treating COVID-19 patients, a group of JPL engineers prototyped two different designs focused on requirements defined by the respiratory experts; tested the prototype at the frontline of the pandemic at the New York Mt. Sinai Hospital, submitted the design to the FDA for Emergency Use Authorization, showcased the prototype at the White House to the POTUS, obtained FDA/EUA, and issued a global royalty free license, and received over 100 applicants world-wide… all in less than 2 months.

Please join us online Friday, June 19, 8:00–9:00am PST when Leon Alkalai, JPL Fellow, Manager of the Office of Strategic Partnerships, Jet Propulsion Laboratory, California Institute of Technology, will give us an interesting look at how to tap your organization’s strengths, pivot the business in response to unforeseen challenges and opportunities, and do it successfully in a very short timeframe. Not only is this a compelling and timely topic, but the takeaway lessons in formulating a vision, building a highly effective team, and impeccable execution derived from this effort have applicability to virtually any business.

The meeting is free for members and $25 for non-members and is limited to 100 attendees. For more information and to register to attend the meeting go to http://adflajun20.eventbrite.com.

“Secure Global Supply Chains”

“Secure Global Supply Chains”

Los Angeles Chapter meeting on February 21

NOTE: Building security policy. All attendees must register no less than 24 hours in advance of the meeting or they will not be allowed entrance to the building.

Some of the largest corporations in the world have embraced blockchain technology as a means of improving increased traceability and transparency into their supply chains. From tracking beef, tracing car and aircraft parts to verifying luxury bags and diamonds, blockchain technology is providing companies and consumers unprecedented insight into where goods have come from and every step they took along the supply chain. This carries the further benefit of allowing corporations to identify and root out unethical practices or labor conditions; notably, Coca-Cola conducted a blockchain pilot project with the US State Department aimed at eliminating forced labor in its supply chains.

Please join us in Century City, CA, on Tuesday, February 21, 7:30am–9:00am (breakfast and networking at 7:00am), when Chief Operating Officer of the Global Blockchain Business Council (GBBC) Mercina Tillemann will discuss how blockchain is revolutionizing global supply chains, giving consumers greater insight into what they are buying and helping companies control quality and act more ethically and responsibly.

The GBBC is the leading industry association for the blockchain technology ecosystem. Launched in Davos in 2017, the GBBC brings together innovators and thought-leaders from over 50 countries to further adoption of blockchain technology by engaging and educating regulators, business leaders, and lawmakers on the benefits and applications of this groundbreaking technology. We believe in blockchain technology’s ability to create more secure, equitable, and functional societies around the globe.

The meeting is free for members and $40 for non-members ($30 Early Bird until February 13). Guests may attend twice for free. For more information and to register to attend the meeting go to https://adflafeb20.eventbrite.com.
