“Enabling a New Way of Doing Space”Brane-Craft--space-debris.

Los Angeles Chapter meeting on August 19

The current momentum of the space industry is being led by the NewSpace startups, and the impact of this growing segment reaches all aspects of the space industry. As a non-profit company, The Aerospace Corporation has a unique role between the government and industry, and is supporting government agencies as they learn of the implications of NewSpace while also enabling these new companies to grow and achieve success. Aerospace also has its own research laboratories, and demonstrates technologies through its AeroCube satellite program.

Please join us in Los Angeles on Friday, August 19, 2016, 7:30am – 9:00am PDT (networking at 7:00am), when Dr. Jenny Gautier, Director of Commercial Programs, The Aerospace Corporation, will talk about the commercial space industry as seen from the perspective of a Federally Funded Research and Development Center (FFRDC).

The meeting is free for A&D Forum members and $40 for non-members ($30 Early Bird until August 12). For more information and to register to attend the meeting in person or for free via the web, go to https://adflaaug16.eventbrite.com.

Tour of Virgin Galactic Long Beach

Tour of Virgin Galactic Long Beachlauncherone

Aerospace & Defense Forum Los Angeles Chapter Meeting on July 15

Virgin Galactic, the privately-funded space company, leases a 150,000 square foot facility in Long Beach that houses design and manufacturing of the company’s small satellite launch vehicle, LauncherOne.

LauncherOne is a new two-stage orbital launch vehicle being designed by Virgin Galactic specifically to launch commercial or governmental satellites that weigh 500 pounds (225 kilograms) or less. Much like SpaceShipTwo, the company’s reusable vehicle for space tourism, LauncherOne is designed to be launched from the WhiteKnightTwo carrier aircraft, giving customers the ability to avoid crowded and expensive launch ranges while also picking the launch location best suited for their mission.

Please join us in Long Beach on Friday, July 15, 2016, 8:00am – 10:00am for a tour of this exciting facility.

The meeting is free for A&D Forum members and $40 for non-members ($30 Early Bird until June 24). Non-US citizens are welcome. Registration is required and closes 8am July 1. For more information and to register to attend the tour go to https://adflajul16.eventbrite.com.

“An Emerging Business Model for Commercial Space”

commercial spacecraft“An Emerging Business Model for Commercial Space”

Los Angeles Chapter meeting on June 17

During the past ten years, the barriers constraining commercial space projects and investments have been reduced through key factors such as the emergence of a robust international commercial space transportation system and non-government management of the International Space Station.

However, the existing portfolio of space ventures nevertheless remains very limited. The conclusion we’re left to draw is that significant barriers remain to full exploitation of the potential that space science offers.

Please join us in Los Angeles on Friday, June 17, 2016, 7:30am – 9:00am PDT (networking at 7:00am), when Dr. Michael Wiskerchen, Founder of SpaceTech Holdings will discuss the future of space, the changes happening in the industry and the impact on the Southern California economy, and new opportunities created through commercial space initiatives. Join us to gain a better understanding of the potential for commercial space development, investment opportunities, current activity in the greater Los Angeles area, what’s real and what’s not, and why commercial space is or isn’t a good investment opportunity. Whether you are an entrepreneur or established manufacturer, investor, or space enthusiast; Dr. Wiskerchen’s presentation will provide interesting insights into the rapidly changing landscape of commercial space.

The meeting is free for A&D Forum members and $40 for non-members ($30 Early Bird until June 10). For more information and to register to attend the meeting in person or for free via the web, go to https://adflajun16.eventbrite.com.

Service providers as well as those in the corporate world share the same challenge. How do we clearly articulate our “unique selling proposition” in a way that brings us more prospects and clients.

Please join us in Los Angeles on Friday, May 20, 2016, 7:30am – 9:00am PDT (networking at 7:00am), when Anne Convery, a “messaging” expert, can show us how to make that happen.

“Maximizing Enterprise Value: It’s Never too Soon to Start!”

“Maximizing Enterprise Value: It’s Never too Soon to Start!” Nest Egg Retirement

Los Angeles Chapter meeting on February 19

An important presentation for investors and company owners.

The most common statement made by selling private owners at the close: “I wish I had started thinking about selling at least 3-5 years ago and started asking questions and preparing for the sale then. My multiple would have been a lot higher.” If you are an investor (private equity group or venture capital) or a company owner, you shouldn’t miss Larry O’Toole’s presentation when he shares how he was able to meet an owner’s multiple target by starting early and asking the right questions.

As we all know, the aerospace industry is currently experiencing a frenzy of acquisitions.

Selling a business is all about risk. The higher the risk, the lower the value. The lower the risk, the higher the value. As business leaders, it is a primary function of our positions to increase the attractiveness of our businesses and ready them for scrutiny by a potential buyer. Whether you run a department, or an entire business, creating enterprise value is a key part, if not the sole purpose, of the job. Too often, however, thought is given too late in the game.

Please join us in Los Angeles, CA on Friday, February 19, 2016 (networking at 7:00am, meeting 7:30– 9:00am PST), when Larry O’Toole, CEO of Sanders Industries Holdings, Inc. will discuss the tangible and effective steps that can be taken to build enterprise value and, most of all, how to capture it through a liquidity event.

The meeting is free for A&D Forum members and $40 for non-members ($30 Early Bird until February 12). For more information and to register to attend the meeting in person or for free via the web, go to https://adflafeb16.eventbrite.com.

“Life in the Universe and the Breakthrough Initiatives”

BPF_Logo“Life in the Universe and the Breakthrough Initiatives”

Los Angeles Chapter meeting on November 20

Who are we? A mature civilization, like a mature individual, must ask itself this question. Is humanity defined by its divisions, its problems, its passing needs and trends? Or do we have a shared face, turned outward to the Universe? In 1990, Voyager 1 swiveled its camera and captured the ‘Pale Blue Dot’ – an image of Earth from six billion kilometers away. It was a mirror held up to our planet – home of water, life, and minds. A reminder that we share something precious and rare. But how rare, exactly? The only life? The only minds?

Please join us in Los Angeles on Friday, November 20, 2015, 7:30am – 9:00am PDT (networking at 7:00am), when Simon “Pete” Worden, (Brig. Gen., USAF, Ret., PhD), Chairman of the Breakthrough Prize Foundation and former Director of NASA’s Ames Research Center will brief us on the Breakthrough Initiatives, launched by Yuri Milner and Stephen Hawking on July 20, 2015.

The first initiative is ‘Breakthrough Listen’ and represents the largest ever scientific research program aimed at finding evidence of civilizations beyond Earth. The scope and power of the search are on an unprecedented scale: The program includes a survey of the 1,000,000 closest stars to Earth. It scans the center of our galaxy and the entire galactic plane. Beyond the Milky Way, it listens for messages from the 100 closest galaxies to ours. Listen combines these instruments with innovative software and data analysis techniques. Breakthrough Listen will span 10 years and commit a total of $100,000,000.

The second initiative is ‘Breakthrough Message’. If we or others succeed in discovering another civilization, what – if anything – should we say to them? The initiative aims to encourage debate about how and what to communicate with possible intelligent beings beyond earth. It takes the form of an international competition to create messages that could be read by an advanced civilization. The message must be in digital format, and should be representative of humanity and planet Earth.

The meeting is free for A&D Forum members and $40 for non-members ($30 Early Bird until November 13). For more information and to register to attend the meeting in person or for free via the web, go to https://adflanov15.eventbrite.com.
