OC Chapter November 1 meeting

“Growing a Company in Challenging Times”

Lyndon Faulkner

Since 2008, rough economic times have hit countries and organizations across the globe, forcing them to adopt creative solutions to continue to grow. Many other companies didn’t even make it through the tumult. In contrast, Pelican Products grew nearly 200% in the six years 2006 – 2011.

Please join us on Thursday, November 1, 2012, 7:30 am – 9:00 am, when Lyndon Faulkner, President and CEO, Pelican Products, Inc. will explain how Pelican achieved that phenomenal growth during very challenging times. Lyndon will also provide an overview of the strategies and the thinking behind them. Citing case studies, he will explain the basics of finding new applications for current products, entering new markets, expanding geographic presence, and acquisitions. He will also discuss how Pelican, as a predominantly B2B company, successfully made the difficult transition into the consumer market by implementing fundamental changes in its marketing and distribution.

The meeting is free, but RSVP’s in advance to Ivan Rosenberg are required to attend.

LA Chapter October 19 meeting

“The Space Industry’s Impact on the California Economy”

Randy Garber
California’s space industry is a powerful contributor to the state’s economy—as large as or larger than other prominent California industries such as agriculture and motion picture/entertainment. While California’s unique space ecosystem of manufacturers, supply base, research & development and customers provides strong competitive advantage for industry participants doing business in the state, other states and global competitors are aggressively challenging that advantage.

Please join us in Los Angeles on Friday, October 19, 2012, 7:30 am – 9:00 am, when Randy Garber, Partner with A.T. Kearney, will present research results on the space industry’s economic impact in California and how California stacks up relative to other states. He will also explore implications and actions for California government and industry leaders.

The meeting is free, but RSVP’s in advance to Ivan Rosenberg are required to attend.

When it comes to Export Compliance, the stakes can be high, with door-closing fees and fines, and even jail time. If you are a US manufacturer, exporter, broker or distributor, or even invest or work with these types of companies, you need to understand what the export laws are and how they apply to you.

Please join us in Los Angeles on Friday, September 21, 2012, 7:30 am – 9:00 am, when Abby Walsh, CEO of True Compliance Group, will present a brief overview of the key US agencies and laws governing export, and will give practical tips concerning what executives need to know to be in compliance with export laws.

OC Chapter September 6 meeting

“”(Re)position for Growth and Stakeholder Value”

Anders Davas

The effects of globalization are having significant impact on businesses with operations in high-cost countries (advance economies). Customers are demanding cheaper products with the same or higher expectations on delivery and quality. Companies that cannot meet these expectations will eventually go out of business. Thus driving operational excellence is becoming a vital strategy.

Please join us on Thursday, September 6, 2012, 7:30 am – 9:00 am, when Anders Davas, Divisional Manager, Operational Excellence and Continuous Improvements at Eaton Aerospace will present a 4-Step model to operational excellence that any company can successfully employ. Other topics covered will be strategic deployment, continuous improvement and lean leadership.

The meeting is free, but RSVP’s in advance to Ivan Rosenberg are required to attend.

Mike Stark
For many business owners, the primary focus of their business deals with serving their customers.

Please join us in Los Angeles on Friday, August 17, 2012, 7:30 am – 9:00 am, when Michael Stark, President of Pacer Distribution Services, will discuss the “how” of serving your customers, or as he refers to it, the “real business” of your business, through the management of your supply chain. Topics will include horizontal collaboration and sharing best practices, as well as managing a global supply chain and how to improve efficiency, both globally and locally. OC Chapter August 2 Meeting

“Expanding International Business”

Jason Childs

Expanding internationally can be a daunting task, but the reward is significant. The U.S. aerospace industry is the largest in the world. In 2010, despite the lingering effects of the global economic downturn, the U.S. aerospace industry made $85 billion in export sales. BRIC (Brazil, China, India and Russia) were a significant portion of that and are experiencing significant growth. Aerospace product consumption is on the rise around the world and well prepared U.S. suppliers are the major beneficiary. Please join us on Thursday, August 2, 2012, 7:30 am – 9:00 am, for an opportunity to accelerate your international expansion. Jason Childs, Vice President of Worldwide Sales, Engineered Materials Platform, Esterline Technologies Corporation, will discuss market penetration strategy, IP protection, staff selection, and basic contract development.

Jason Sproule, Senior International Trade Specialist, U.S. Commercial Service will describe how to access the many types of export assistance offered by the US Government at little or no cost to domestic suppliers.

In addition, suppliers will have an opportunity to connect with Esterline procurement.

The meeting is free, but RSVP’s in advance to Ivan Rosenberg are required to attend.

The Orange County chapter was founded by Frontier Associates and D.A. Davidson & Co., and is sponsored by Burdge Logistics, Boyle, Ogata, Bregman, Moss Adams, and Stradling Yocca Carlson & Rauth.

LA Chapter July 20 Meeting

“Ensuring Future A&D Competitiveness”

Liz Kennick
David Knight
As A&D customers outsource more assembly, engineering, and supply chain management, having access to qualified engineers is becoming critical to long-term survival of an A&D supplier. However, for many reasons there is a significant lack of such candidates in the US, which could lead to serious competitive disadvantages of US A&D companies versus international suppliers.

This month’s LA chapter meeting focuses on how to interest and inspire current and future generations in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math). Please join us in Los Angeles on Friday, July 20, 2012, 7:30 am – 9:00 am when Elizabeth Kennick, Project Manager, Teachers in Space, Space Frontier Foundation, will discuss the present situation and what we can do as individuals and A&D companies to help turn things around. David Knight will show sections of an upcoming documentary about the Space Shuttle that will excite the public, and especially our youth, in aerospace and STEM.

The meeting is free, but RSVP’s in advance to Ivan Rosenberg are required to attend.

The Los Angeles chapter of The Aerospace & Defense Forum was founded by Frontier Associates and the 62 Mile Club, and is sponsored by Jeffer, Mangels, Butler & Mitchell, Moss Adams, Boyle, Ogata, Bregman, and Cal Poly Pomona.
