San Diego Chapter meeting on May 24
Please join us on Thursday, May 24 (Tour: 3:30-5:00pm, optional Social with crew: approx 5:00-6:30pm) for a once in a lifetime opportunity (unless you are in the Navy) to see the most advanced ship in the US Navy, from engine room to bridge, and almost everything in between (including the combat center). Our host will be Captain Scott Tait, Commanding Officer of the USS Zumwalt.
The USS Zumwalt (DDG-1000) is a $7 billion stealth guided missile destroyer that hosts an incredible array of capabilities not seen in any other ship in the fleet. The ship’s new wave-piercing inverted bow and tumblehome hull configuration reduce her radar cross-section to that akin to a fishing boat despite her large size.
The Zumwalt class was designed with multimission capability. In addition to the usual destroyer missions of anti-air, anti-surface, and antisubmarine warfare, the Zumwalt has technology onboard for targeting submarines, defeating minefields, and obliterating shore defenses with low-altitude missiles that evade radar, artillery, and even an electromagnetic rail gun.
Computers and automated systems also mean less crew onboard. A typical Arleigh-Burke class destroyer requires 210 sailors, but the Zumwalt requires only 130 to operate it, plus another 28 for aviation operations (the ship has a helipad large enough for two helicopters or one helicopter and a vertical takeoff drone).
Registration is $20 for members & after May 8 is available to non-members for $50. $20 of each ticket is a contribution to the crew’s favorite charity. For more information and to register to attend the tour go to http://adfsdmay18.eventbrite.com.
