“The Future of Space in Los Angeles”

“The Future of Space in Los Angeles”

Los Angeles Chapter meeting on August 17

The global space industry is projected to grow from a few hundred billion dollars today to anywhere between 1 to 3 trillion dollars by 2040 according to studies published by Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, and Bank of America Merrill Lynch. To understand how and why the industry could grow into $1 trillion or more, it is critical to have the insight into what goes into it, its enablers, and its hurdles.

Deloitte, on behalf of the Space Frontier Foundation and other global partners, is currently conducting the Space Event Horizon study that examines the space technology ecosystem between now and 2030 and 2045 (the Event Horizon). This study is designed to address the future space architecture, which will have many players and all of which will be operating in a highly interconnected environment. The study examines the current and proposed commercial and military applications across four time horizons and provides an assessment of the impediments and enabling technologies required to realize the event horizon end state.

Join us at Century City on Friday, August 17, 7:30–9:00am, when Jeff Matthews, Deloitte’s Specialist Leader for commercial space, will present an overview of the study and discuss how the growth of the space market across the time horizons can drive growth in the Los Angeles aerospace cluster and the associated technology ecosystem.

The meeting is free for members & $40 for non-members ($30 Early Bird until Augsut 10). For more information and to register to attend the meeting go to http://adflaaug18.eventbrite.com.

“The Disruptively Changing Aerospace Landscape”

“The Disruptively Changing Aerospace Landscape”

OC Chapter meeting in Irvine on August 2

Boeing and Embraer, Airbus and the C-Series, Boeing’s thrust into the aftermarket, seats, APUs, and Avionics….Never before has there been such bold moves to capture more of the Aerospace market by the big OEMs.

How will this impact the overall competitive landscape? What are the challenges ahead for suppliers, MROs, distributors, and manufacturers? How will the Tier 1 suppliers react? How well will Boeing and Airbus execute on these new strategies? What challenges might they face.

How can you leverage the changes going on in the marketplace and what other disruption might we see? While no one can know for sure how these new strategic thrusts will play out, one thing is for sure, the game is changing and to grow and thrive, the industry will have to change with it. Disrupt or be disrupted. Adapt or die. Old business models are not going to work going forward. How can companies adapt and flourish in these times of intense and disruptive change?

Join us in Irvine on Thursday, August 2, 7:30–9:00am, when Jeffrey Johnston, President & CEO, Desser Holdings will present and lead a discussion on these and other questions.

The meeting is free for members & $40 for non-members ($30 Early Bird until July 26). Click here to register to attend the meeting.

Tour of the James Webb Space Telescope

Tour of the James Webb Space Telescope

South Bay Chapter meeting in Redondo Beach on August 6

James Webb Space Telescope

Come join us to see the assembly currently underway of the James Webb Space Telescope at the Northrop Grumman Space Park in Redondo Beach. The Webb Telescope is the successor to the Hubble Telescope and will be the most technologically advanced space telescope ever made and when completed. It is being developed through a collaboration of NASA and other foreign Space Agencies. With an estimated overall cost of 10 billion dollars, this will probably be the most expensive assembly item you will ever witness.

Currently, the Hubble Telescope travels 354 miles from earth and orbits around earth. The Webb Telescope will orbit the sun at a distance of just under 1 million miles from earth. Because the Webb will end up so far into space, and will have an advanced infrared telescope, it will be able to view galaxies never before seen.

Aerospace in Motion Exhibit

In addition, we will tour Northrop’s interactive Aerospace in Motion Exhibit which displays the company’s past, present and future developments in aerospace.

“The Transformative Effects of Advanced Manufacturing”

“The Transformative Effects of Advanced Manufacturing”

San Diego Chapter meeting on July 24

Manufacturing today is fast-paced- every minute of production affects the bottom line. Businesses face myriad challenges in testing, validating, verifying and certifying new processes all of which is compounded by the fact that development cycles are shortening and regulations are constantly changing.

Aerospace and Defense are the industries where components, systems, materials, performances and manufacturing processes continue to advance at a rapid pace, with few signs of slowing.

There are many opportunities ahead for the aerospace manufacturing industry. These include: disruptive processes such as additive manufacturing; expanded use of CAD-based simulation; rapid prototyping; the internet of things as well as newly created materials that bring substantial benefits to end users.

Along with these opportunities come challenges. Among them are an increasing demand for precision, the need to improve the speed of the additive process, the desire to increase throughput, developing and maintaining a skilled workforce and, of course, the need to do all this profitably.

Please join us on Tuesday, July 24 (networking: 5:30-6:15pm, meeting: 6:15-7:45pm PST) when our esteemed panel will discuss these opportunities and challenges and how they have adapted to take advantage of new processes and technologies. On the panel are Michael Maughn, Senior Director, Advanced Programs & Strategic Development, General Atomics, and Jacquelyn Berry, Staff Engineer, Materials and Processing, R&D, UTC Aerospace Systems – Aerostructures.

The meeting is free for members & $40 for non-members ($30 Early Bird until July 17). For more information and to register to attend the meeting go to http://adfsdjul18.eventbrite.com.
