“Additive Manufacturing/3D Printing: State of the Industry”

“Additive Manufacturing/3D Printing: State of the Industry”The Future of 3D Printing

South Bay (CA) Chapter meeting on March 9

Since its inception in 1986, additive manufacturing has been changing the way in which people think about manufacturing. Traditional manufacturing is of course alive and well; in fact, it is a very necessary element despite all of the hype surrounding the additive technologies. That being said, the additive space will define manufacturing in the future.

3D Printing, as it is now commonly called, is a very fluid sector. Between the newer technologies and the fact that many of the older patents are now expiring, we expect to see even greater diversity in the marketplace.

Please join us in Torrance on Wednesday, March 9, 2016, 7:30am – 9:00am PDT (networking at 7:00am), when three experts on 3D printing from SoCal Office Technologies will present an overview of the Additive marketplace. They will cover current processes, materials and aerospace applications as well as look at future potentials. They will also highlight the unique opportunities additive manufacturing brings to the table in terms of manufacturing and design.

Attendance is open to all. The meeting is free for A&D Forum members and $40 for non-members ($30 Early Bird until March 2). Advanced registration is required. For more information and to register to attend the meeting, go to http://adfsbmar16.eventbrite.com.

“A Pilot’s Comparison, U-2 & SR-71”

“A Pilot’s Comparison, U-2 & SR-71”U-2

Dallas-Ft. Worth Chapter March 10 meeting

Please join us in Arlington on Thur, March 10, (networking at 7:00am, meeting 7:30–9:00am), when Stormy Boudreaux, Test Director – Manned Tactical Simulator, Lockheed Martin ADP, will give a pilot’s comparison of two Lockheed Skunk Works legendary aircraft. Stormy is one of only twelve pilots who have flown operational sorties in both U-2 and SR-71 aircraft.

TSR-71his talk will primarily compare the two very different designs for high altitude flight that came out of the Skunk Works in the Fifties and Sixties. The long-winged jet-powered glider, the U-2 Dragon Lady, flying tens of thousands of feet above the world records for altitude that existed at the time; and the triple sonic, and still the fastest manned air-breathing aircraft, the SR-71 Blackbird. The Blackbird was secretly flying at three times the speed of sound while other “experts” were insisting that the feat was impossible.

You will be privy to the earlier missions and flight characteristics of these high altitude reconnaissance aircraft, as well as the manufacturing and assembly secrets that made these aircraft so advanced for their time.

Meeting is free for A&D Forum members and $40 for non-members ($30 Early Bird until March 3). For more information and to register to attend the meeting, go to http://adfdfwmar16.eventbrite.com.

“Maximizing Enterprise Value: It’s Never too Soon to Start!”

“Maximizing Enterprise Value: It’s Never too Soon to Start!” Nest Egg Retirement

Los Angeles Chapter meeting on February 19

An important presentation for investors and company owners.

The most common statement made by selling private owners at the close: “I wish I had started thinking about selling at least 3-5 years ago and started asking questions and preparing for the sale then. My multiple would have been a lot higher.” If you are an investor (private equity group or venture capital) or a company owner, you shouldn’t miss Larry O’Toole’s presentation when he shares how he was able to meet an owner’s multiple target by starting early and asking the right questions.

As we all know, the aerospace industry is currently experiencing a frenzy of acquisitions.

Selling a business is all about risk. The higher the risk, the lower the value. The lower the risk, the higher the value. As business leaders, it is a primary function of our positions to increase the attractiveness of our businesses and ready them for scrutiny by a potential buyer. Whether you run a department, or an entire business, creating enterprise value is a key part, if not the sole purpose, of the job. Too often, however, thought is given too late in the game.

Please join us in Los Angeles, CA on Friday, February 19, 2016 (networking at 7:00am, meeting 7:30– 9:00am PST), when Larry O’Toole, CEO of Sanders Industries Holdings, Inc. will discuss the tangible and effective steps that can be taken to build enterprise value and, most of all, how to capture it through a liquidity event.

The meeting is free for A&D Forum members and $40 for non-members ($30 Early Bird until February 12). For more information and to register to attend the meeting in person or for free via the web, go to https://adflafeb16.eventbrite.com.

“Radically Reducing the Cost of Assemblies”

“Radically Reducing the Cost of Assemblies”mind_the_gap-logo

South Bay (CA) Chapter meeting on February 10

For over twenty years, Aerojet Rocketdyne has endeavored to change the fundamental way of thinking about product design and production in our industry. When combined with other techniques such as Design to Cost and Advanced Manufacturing, a new integrated design capability emerges that promises to produce simplified, more rapidly developed, affordable assembled products. This new approach applies the concepts (and benefits) of lean manufacturing (typically limited to part fabrication) to the level of assembly.

Please join us in Torrance on Wednesday, February 10, 2016, 7:30am – 9:00am PDT (networking at 7:00am), when Art Weiss, former Executive Director, Defense Advanced Programs, Aerojet Rocketdyne, will present this new way of thinking about systems and design that can have a dramatic impact on the costs, delivery time, and reliability of assemblies.

Attendance is open to all. The meeting is free for A&D Forum members and $40 for non-members ($30 Early Bird until February 3). Advanced registration is required. For more information and to register to attend the meeting, go to http://adfsbfeb16.eventbrite.com.

“From Rivets to Resin – The Present and Future of Aircraft Structures”

“From Rivets to Resin – The Present and Future of Aircraft Structures”Composite airframe 1

Orange County Chapter meeting on February 4
(live webstream available)

The use of composites in aircraft structures has been one of the most pronounced developments in the aerospace industry in recent years, but the market for aluminum aircraft is still very strong. How long will it take to phase-out aluminum structured aircraft, if ever?

More importantly, how will this composite transition progress? We’ve seen new aircraft built with airframes that are primarily composite, while other new aircraft utilize composites in just certain components, such as the wings.

Please join us in Irvine on Thur, Feb 4, 7:30– 9:00am PDT (networking at 7:00am), when Ben Hempstead, Mechanical Engineer Lead / Chief of Staff at Electroimpact, will discuss the market outlook for both riveted and composite airframes, as well as the challenges, advantages and opportunities associated with both. Additionally, Ben will discuss the types of automation systems that Electroimpact designs and builds, and how the Company was able to quickly adapt to the changing industry.
