In June 2014 the report “An Analysis of the Competitive Advantage of the United States of America in Commercial Human Orbital Spaceflight Markets” was published. This report identified existing and potential Private Human Access to Space/Human Orbital Markets and analyzed the U.S. industrial supply chain supporting commercial human orbital spaceflight in those markets.

Please join us in Irvine, CA on Thursday, March 5, 2015 (networking at 7:00am, meeting 7:30– 9:00am PST), when Dr. Greg Autry, Assistant Professor of Clinical Entrepreneurship, Marshall School of Business, University of Southern California, one of the authors of the report, will review the findings of the report and offer updates based on recent events in commercial space and global markets. The study revealed that while the United States currently possesses significant competitive advantage in commercial human orbital spaceflight, there are several areas of note that present a challenge to the sustainability of this advantage. Dr. Autry will focus on the challenges and the politics behind them.

10 February 2015 is Day One for the new Orbital ATK. It’s a new company combining the Aerospace and Defense Groups of ATK with launch and satellite provider Orbital Sciences.

This merger is happening at a time of significant change in space acquisition. The technology innovations from many “New Space” companies, and some “Old Space” companies, are spawning business innovations in areas like remote sensing, resource development and space logistics. At the same time the Air Force looking at ways to streamline its often challenging procurement processes to reduce the costs of its systems and take advantage of some of these commercial trends.

In the future, unmanned aircraft systems will help monitor our borders, deliver packages to our homes, improve the productivity of farms, help find missing hikers, lost children and escaped criminals, provide Internet access for people in remote locations and generate high-resolution 3-D models of critical infrastructure. Yet significant challenges to the growth of this industry exist, making investment decisions difficult to time.

Please join us in San Diego on Friday, February 6, 2015 for a special tour of the Marine Corps Air Station Miramar (networking at 7:00am, meeting and tour 7:30am-12:00pm, lunch 12:30-1:30pm).

Colonel John Farnam, MCAS Miramar Commanding Officer, will welcome us, followed by a brief overview of the day and logistics. Besides seeing the base from a bus we will 1) visit (and experience) CH-53 Super Stallion Helicopters and Aviation Crew simulators that are used for training and 2) visit with CH-53 Super Stallion Helicopter & FA-18 Hornet Jet squadrons, see the aircraft up close and even get to sit in a cockpit. The event will conclude with a catered lunch at the Officers Club.

Please join us in San Diego on the evening of Thursday, January 29, 2015 (networking at 5:00pm, meeting 5:30– 7:00pm PST), when a distinguished panel of experts will address how San Diego companies can identify and pursue revenue opportunities in cybersecurity.

This joint meeting of the San Diego Chapter of the A&D Forum and CyberTECH will begin with briefings by SPAWAR San Diego and Gary Hayslip, Deputy Director, Chief Information Security Officer, Department of Information Technology, City of San Diego, to discuss the specific cyber capabilities (products, tools and services) that they will likely be acquiring over the next couple of years. Then Shirley Adams, Vice President, Navy & Marine Corps Services; General Dynamics Information Technology, will describe the “process” for finding and responding to bids and a general discussion on bid process.

This will be followed by a panel discussion moderated by Darin Andersen, founder of CyberTECH and Cyber United, and audience Q&A.

When Dr Ashton Carter was Undersecretary of Defense for Acquisition, Technology and Logistics, he issued a set of guidelines for improving the department’s ability to manage successful acquisition programs, Known as the Better Buying Power initiatives (BBPi), these guidelines have been recently updated to BBP 3.0.

Please join us in Los Angeles on Friday, January 16, 2015, 7:30am – 9:00am PDT (networking at 7:00am), when Dr. Stan Rosen, Professor of Acquisition Management at the Defense Acquisition University & Vice-Chairman of the National Space Society, will explain the Better Buying Power initiatives, and clarify what’s new in BBP 3.0, and why. All those selling to the Department of Defense need to understand this guidance, as it is impacting the way DoD does business in acquiring products and services.
