“Post-Election Update: What it means for the Economy and for the Aerospace and Defense Industry”

“Post-Election Update: What it means for the Economy and for the Aerospace and Defense Industry”

San Diego Chapter meeting on November 14

Now that the elections are over (and the House is controlled by___???) and President Donald Trump has signed the Fiscal Year 2019 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) in August….what does this mean and how might this affect the A&D industry as a whole and San Diego in particular?

Please join us on Wednesday, November 14th as DeAnne Steele, Managing Director and Head of the National Portfolio Management and Consultancy Practice at U. S. Trust, Bank of America Private Wealth Management helps guide us through the landscape of 2019 and beyond.

The Fiscal Year 2019 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) cleared the path for a host of Navy and Marine Corps programs and policy initiatives to take effect. The FY 2019 NDAA sets the spending and policy priorities for the Department of Defense. A separate appropriations process will provide the money for the Pentagon’s now authorized $717 billion-worth of programs.

The meeting is free for members & $40 for non-members ($30 Early Bird until November 7). For more information and to register to attend the meeting go to http://adfsdnov18.eventbrite.com.

“The Transformative Effects of Advanced Manufacturing”

“The Transformative Effects of Advanced Manufacturing”

San Diego Chapter meeting on July 24

Manufacturing today is fast-paced- every minute of production affects the bottom line. Businesses face myriad challenges in testing, validating, verifying and certifying new processes all of which is compounded by the fact that development cycles are shortening and regulations are constantly changing.

Aerospace and Defense are the industries where components, systems, materials, performances and manufacturing processes continue to advance at a rapid pace, with few signs of slowing.

There are many opportunities ahead for the aerospace manufacturing industry. These include: disruptive processes such as additive manufacturing; expanded use of CAD-based simulation; rapid prototyping; the internet of things as well as newly created materials that bring substantial benefits to end users.

Along with these opportunities come challenges. Among them are an increasing demand for precision, the need to improve the speed of the additive process, the desire to increase throughput, developing and maintaining a skilled workforce and, of course, the need to do all this profitably.

Please join us on Tuesday, July 24 (networking: 5:30-6:15pm, meeting: 6:15-7:45pm PST) when our esteemed panel will discuss these opportunities and challenges and how they have adapted to take advantage of new processes and technologies. On the panel are Michael Maughn, Senior Director, Advanced Programs & Strategic Development, General Atomics, and Jacquelyn Berry, Staff Engineer, Materials and Processing, R&D, UTC Aerospace Systems – Aerostructures.

The meeting is free for members & $40 for non-members ($30 Early Bird until July 17). For more information and to register to attend the meeting go to http://adfsdjul18.eventbrite.com.

Tour of the USS Zumwalt

Tour of the USS Zumwalt

San Diego Chapter meeting on May 24

Please join us on Thursday, May 24 (Tour: 3:30-5:00pm, optional Social with crew: approx 5:00-6:30pm) for a once in a lifetime opportunity (unless you are in the Navy) to see the most advanced ship in the US Navy, from engine room to bridge, and almost everything in between (including the combat center). Our host will be Captain Scott Tait, Commanding Officer of the USS Zumwalt.

The USS Zumwalt (DDG-1000) is a $7 billion stealth guided missile destroyer that hosts an incredible array of capabilities not seen in any other ship in the fleet. The ship’s new wave-piercing inverted bow and tumblehome hull configuration reduce her radar cross-section to that akin to a fishing boat despite her large size.

The Zumwalt class was designed with multimission capability. In addition to the usual destroyer missions of anti-air, anti-surface, and antisubmarine warfare, the Zumwalt has technology onboard for targeting submarines, defeating minefields, and obliterating shore defenses with low-altitude missiles that evade radar, artillery, and even an electromagnetic rail gun.

Computers and automated systems also mean less crew onboard. A typical Arleigh-Burke class destroyer requires 210 sailors, but the Zumwalt requires only 130 to operate it, plus another 28 for aviation operations (the ship has a helipad large enough for two helicopters or one helicopter and a vertical takeoff drone).

Registration is $20 for members & after May 8 is available to non-members for $50. $20 of each ticket is a contribution to the crew’s favorite charity. For more information and to register to attend the tour go to http://adfsdmay18.eventbrite.com.

Please join us on Tuesday, March 27 (networking: 5:30-6:15pm, meeting: 6:15-7:45pm PST), when our panel of industry experts Ryan Mitchell, CAIA (Wealth Manager, BNY Mellon Wealth Management), John Tishler, Esq. (Partner, Sheppard Mullin), and Bruce Strumlauf, MS, CPA (Shareholder, LevitZacks) will discuss how the recent passage of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act should affect businesses, investment policy and mergers and acquisitions, in 2018 and beyond.

“Opportunity for Local A&D Companies to Benefit from New DoD Grant Program”

San Diego Chapter meeting on January 23

Propel San Diego is a grant initiative from the DOD’s Office of Economic Adjustment (OEA) designed to provide strategic and sustainable assistance to firms in San Diego who sell products and services to DoD.

As part of this project the San Diego Regional EDC conducted their largest survey report ever to learn about specific challenges and issues impacting defense companies in San Diego County. The results of that research shed light on the character of the firms operating in San Diego as well as opportunities for the region to shore up local supply chain issues and potential capture more defense spending.

JW Hill Capital’s Acquisition of Bandy Manufacturing from GKN Aerospace

JW Hill Capital’s Acquisition of Bandy Manufacturing from GKN Aerospace

A Joint Event With ACG San Diego

San Diego Chapter meeting on November 21

Independent Sponsors are a growing class of private equity firms that, unlike traditional firms with committed capital, choose to source capital on a deal-by-deal basis. JW Hill Capital, a Newport Beach-based private equity firm, is an Independent Sponsor that recently completed the acquisition of Burbank, California-based Bandy Manufacturing from GKN Aerospace. This deal, a cross-border divestiture from a major European strategic that went through a competitive auction process, is an example of how Independent Sponsors are successfully executing complex transactions.

Join us in Solana Beach, CA, on Tuesday, Nov 21, 7:00–9:00am, when our panel will examine questions such as: What does the Independent Sponsor trend mean for sellers, investors, and operators? How does an Independent Sponsor transaction differ from other buyers and what does that mean for sellers? How was JW Hill Capital, a relatively new firm, able accomplish this transaction? Do we expect to see more divestitures in the near-term as larger companies reshape their portfolios?

Panelists: John Hill (Managing Partner, JW Hill Capital), Neal Nordstrom (Operating Partner, JW Hill Capital), Paul Weisbrich (Managing Director, DA Davidson), Steve Alexander (General Manager, Bandy Manufacturing) and Moderator Ed Lake(CFO Merlin Global Services & A&D Forum, San Diego Chapter Chair)

The meeting is free for A&D Forum members. Register to attend the meeting go to http://adfsdnov17.eventbrite.com. Non-members register through the ACG website at https://www.acg.org/sandiego/events/acg-san-diego-november-ma-ad.
