“Myths and Realities in the Fight for America’s Future”

“Myths and Realities in the Fight for America’s Future”
San Diego Chapter April 25, 2013 meeting

Linden Blue
Linden Blue
Conventional wisdom, popularized by the 1972 Club of Rome Report, holds that there are Limits to Growth for the world. A few years earlier, in 1965 Moore’s Law was enunciated. Since then we have had the demise of the Soviet Union, the Arab Spring and burgeoning nuclear programs in North Korea and Iran.

Please join us on Thursday, April 25, 2013, 7:30am – 9:00am PST, when Linden Blue, Vice-Chairman of General Atomics, will discuss whether we are on a new road to serfdom, a road to Armageddon, or a road to a new era of world prosperity and peace. A lot will depend on the “operating system” we choose.

The meeting will consist of Mr. Blue’s presentation and opportunities for open group discussion and networking.

For more information see the file “Invitation to A&D Forum (SD) (April 2013)”.

“The Expanding Universe: Building Giant Telescopes”

Los Angeles Chapter meeting on April 19

Freedman (edit)Astronomical discoveries have followed the development of new telescopes and instrumentation. In the last few decades alone, we have discovered over 800 new planets outside of those in our own Solar System, observed galaxies colliding and merging out to tremendous distances, and observed the entire universe to be expanding at an increasing rate, pulled apart by a cosmic force, unexplained by any of our current physical theories.

Please join us in Los Angeles on Friday, April 19, 2012, 7:30am – 9:00am PST, when Wendy Freedman, Director, Carnegie Observatories and Chairperson of the Giant Magellan Telescope (GMT) will describe how astronomical telescopes have led to our current understanding of cosmology — the universe on the largest scales. In addition, Wendy will give a current status of the GMT project, and discuss its exciting science goals.

Tour and Presentations at Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne

Los Angeles Chapter meeting on March 15

Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne
This special meeting will convene at the Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne Museum in Canoga Park, full of historical rocket engines and components. The museum will be closing by the end of March, so this will be the last opportunity for a long while to see this unique material.

After the meeting ends at 9:00am, attendees can wander around the museum, where there will be people to answer questions and explain the exhibits. Upon leaving, people can take a tour through the Rocketdyne offices, seeing some of the unique wall displays in the hallways.

“Grow Your Business by Expanding Aftermarket Services”

OC Chapter March 7, 2013 meeting

Peter Collins
Many A&D companies have a substantial portion of their business in the aftermarket – repairing and refurbishing aircraft parts and assemblies. For those who currently don’t, the aftermarket may offer an opportunity to grow the business. Traditionally these services are charged on a per event basis. However other models exist for supporting aircraft systems and equipment during service that offer benefits for both customers and suppliers.

Please join us on Thursday, March 7, 2013, 7:30am – 9:00am PST, when Peter Collins, Director of Strategic Planning and M&A for Parker Aerospace, will describe how value-added services can provide growth beyond the core business for any supplier and some lessons-learned in delivering such programs.

For more information see the file Invitation to A&D Forum (OC) (Mar 2013).pdf.

“‘How to Avoid Being a Casualty of a Raw Materials Shortage”

OC Chapter February 7, 2013 meeting

Bill Leavelle
The availability of raw materials is critical to the ability of suppliers to deliver on time. With increasing volume demands and the tight coupling of lean manufacturing, almost every raw material shortage propagates as significant delays throughout the supply chain. Because on-time delivery is so important, every supplier must be conscious of their vulnerability to fluctuating prices and a limited global supply which can be easily diverted to non-aerospace applications.

Please join us on Thursday, February 7, 2013, 7:30am – 9:00am PST, when Bill Leavelle, General Manager of Castle Metals Aerospace, will describe the operation of the raw materials market, project what is likely to happen over the next year, and suggest what suppliers can do to assure themselves of needed materials.
